Keyword Research Done Right
03 Dec 2021
SEOWorking with the right set of keywords is key to success when it comes to your website traffic, because this determines your ranking in Google searches. This accounts for all sorts of content pages within your website ecosystem, from blogposts to dedicated category pages. Lean back and read on to get a thorough understanding to an effective keyword setup.
Keyword Research
It all begins with googling your main keyword and understanding the search results. Does your offer actually fit in there, or do you need to reconsider? Are there different versions to your keyword to add to your list? You might well find the need to look into a completely different direction of keywords to better suit the users search intentions.
More valuable input can be found on the very end of Google’s search results, where Google gives you search alternatives that are close to your keyword. Similarly, it is worth looking at Google’s suggestions while you type in your keyword in the search bar. This can very well provide you with further information on common searches around your keyword. Two alternative (and free!) tools to look into at this step are answerthepublic and hypersuggest.
Of course you can also make use of Google’s keyword planer, too. Based on up to ten keywords from your list this free tool from Google provides you with more ideas in the sphere of the respective topic. Obviously, you want to make use of various sources to get a good grip and choose the set of keywords with the biggest common denominator.
Search Volume
At this point you should have a solid amount of keywords to work with. Each of those will have a different relevance in terms of search volume, indicating how often people are searching for this specific or the combination of certain keywords. Google’s keyword planner provides you with solid input here, but offers more specific insights only once you invest three figures in Google Ads. Cost per Clicks (CPCs) demonstrate how much you would need to pay for a click if you were to have a campaign running on the respective keyword.
Now that we have a set of keywords and the respective search volumes we need to prioritize. You might assume the higher the search volume the better. But relevance combined with a solid search volume is the key ingredient to a good keyword. A very high search volume might even indicate the need for a dedicated landing or content page. The SERP overlap tool is one way to go to understand the existing correlation between keywords based on the search results and ultimately signals whether or not two keywords have enough overlap to complement one another.
SEO relevant content with the right keywords
Now that we have done the hard work we get to have all the fun. Make sure to use the various keywords you have defined throughout your content piece. Different headlines should contain relevant variations of your keyword list. Also ensure to build a good structure that answers the user’s actual questions. And continuously check in with the pages performance to adjust where needed.
